Our Staff 2019

Leadership Adventure Camp (Grades 7-9)

Pat Straughan, LAC Director

I am very lucky to be leading camp again this year – its a fun part of my work related to CHMS. This is my sixth year at LAC, and I have seen it get more popular each year. I work in CHMS year round and so know almost all of our campers quite well, which allows me to hit the ground running with activities they should enjoy! I love to spend this month in the summer playing and exploring with these kids out of the school setting – it’s a lovely relaxed place to get active and creative, to laugh, play and try new things, and build relationships within the group that continue back in school.  I hope to create a month of program in which our campers can relax and have a really fun summer experience, and also think about how to be good people on the planet – kind to each other, keeping wonder alive, playing hard and living lightly. Welcome all to LAC. Let’s play!

Max Barron, LAC Counselor

Hello! My name is Max, and I am 18 years old. I was an intern with the OCCC for two years, but this is my first year both as a counselor and with the LAC. I just graduated CVU and will be attending RIT this fall. I enjoy being outdoors, fencing, making things, and playing instruments. I’m looking forward to making this my best summer yet at OCCC!

Asher Carfaro, LAC Counselor

Hello! My name is Asher Carfaro. I am currently 19 years old, and this is my 4th year working at OCCC, and my 3rd as a counselor. To be more specific, I’m a part of our group for older kids, the “Leadership Adventure Camp.” On the rare occasions when I’m not writing personal camp bios, I can be found practicing aikido, drumming, doodling pictures of stuff, doodling, making nerdy out of the blue statements, hunting dragons, or building houses for fairies. At the current time, I am taking a gap year between schooling. Each year that I come to camp, I look forward to both the many joyous hours to be had, as well as a new challenge to better myself. And in doing so, hope to inspire the children I work with to do the same.

Darren Gravel, LAC Counselor

Hi My name is Darren. I live in Richmond and I will be starting my senior year at MMU this fall. I am very excited to be a counselor at OCCC this summer. I enjoy being outside, and I play ultimate frisbee and soccer for MMU. As an older brother, I have learned the importance of being a role model and a leader, two things I take a lot of pride in. I have a lot of energy and enthusiasm and I look forward to spending the month of July with you all.

Wynne Poleman, LAC Counselor

HI I’m Wynne! I recently graduated from UVM as a certified Middle School teacher in math and science. I have also been a certified substitute at Camels Hump Middle School for over 4 years. I love this opportunity because I get to see and work with the kids that I meet in LAC, which makes the day all the more fun! This will be my 5th year as a counselor for LAC and I am so excited for the month of July – it’s going to be a blast! I love to stay active, I play on a women’s field hockey league, but I like to play all sports even those I’m not good at! I also enjoy doing crafts and in my opinion the longer I’m outside the better! I love to garden, adventure in the woods and go river swimming! I am so glad to know all those who have come through our camp and I can’t wait to meet our newcomers!

Erin Zubarik, LAC Counselor

My name is Erin Zubarik and this is my first year working with Our Community Cares Camp. I have just finished my first year at New York University. Some of my favorite pastimes include reading, writing, skiing, and playing the violin. I have been lucky enough to study in Florence, Italy and Beijing, China. Something I took away from my time spent abroad was the importance behind relationships–and how they are the basis for a community. Relationships have the power to create understanding, empathy, and joy. This is one of the missions Our Community Cares is dedicated to, and it is a mission I believe in. I’m very excited to be part of OCCC 2019!

Wendy Frink, OCCC Program Director Grades 1-6

My name is Wendy Frink and I have worked at OCCC for 9 years. I was a counselor with the seniors group for 4 years and then worked with multiple groups during “cooking with Wendy”. This is the third year that I will be returning as program director for OCCC. As a preschool teacher, cake decorator, and mom I thought I was prepared for anything. OCCC has opened my eyes to greater challenges and rewards than I could have imagined! During those 4 short weeks we (counselors, interns, campers, kitchen staff) become a family, laughing together, playing together (I never realized how much I love 4 square!), preparing and eating meals together. As with any family, there are always a few bumps in the road but the positive energy keeps us all coming back for another year!

Grace Butler, OCCC Assistant Program Director Grades 1-6

Hi! My name is Grace Butler and this will be my 6th year with OCCC. After 2 years as an intern and 3 as a counselor I’m very excited this summer to take on a new role as the assistant program director. Working at OCCC and getting to spend every day surrounded by such happy campers is an incredible privilege. I recently finished my first year at the University of Vermont where I am majoring in English. I’m a member of UVM’s Irish dance team, the Celtic Cats, and dancing is my favorite hobby. I also really enjoy reading, cooking, and hiking in my free time. I can’t wait to welcome back all our OCCC campers for another awesome summer!

Catherine (Kiki) Laurita, Camper Resource Specialist

I have been working for the camp since 2013 as a special resource counselor. I have my masters in psychology and enjoy being with children and watching them grow and figure things out on their own and learning new things. {sometime with a little help from the staff} I Especially enjoy such a positive and upbeat environment. I have been with the camp for three years I have seen its growth with staff and their ability to facilitate social and educational learning experiences. I enjoy Travel, computer word with friends and games, reality show, tv, puzzles, and cards gardening; and to smelling the flowers and watching them grow. My first experience with the camp was as a volunteer as a foster grandparent. I was amazed at what I saw. The staff was so child-oriented and the environment was set up so children friendly with all kinds of fun experiences that provided fun learning for the children, I look forward to the camps positive and upbeat environment. I find it refreshing and contagious. I leave each day feeling happy.
